High Contrast / Too Many Gurus

I dream in high contrast, burning ice cold Melodramatic, bipolar and bold When I go light I am cheery and droll But when I go dark you will fear for my soul. All you can do is to write from the heart But where is fun in straight literal art? Fiction and fact aren't as clear as they say And you really wouldn't want it any other way I dream in high contrast, burning ice cold Melodramatic, bipolar and bold When I go light I am cheery and droll But when I go dark you will fear for my soul. We all have our demons of whatever kind Draining the spirit and attacking the mind They are dangerous to feed, but denial is worse They are easier to face when you trap them in verse I dream in high contrast, burning ice cold Melodramatic, bipolar and bold When I go light I am cheery and droll But when I go dark you will fear for my soul. Sometimes it's just fate to be misunderstood Dismissed and scapegoated when trying to do good But you'll find no redemption in sanctimony The right kind of bastard's the best thing to be I dream in high contrast, burning ice cold Melodramatic, bipolar and bold When I go light I am cheery and droll But when I go dark you will fear for my soul.

My poor old inbox keeled over last night After a bad attack of good advice blight A thousand jealous gods were crowding the light I wish they'd all just get out of my sight And they said: "Don't be a fool! Forget what others say! Buy my secret system, it's the only way!" There's too many gurus and not enough humility. They've been to dreamland, now they're selling advice They promise certainty from rolling the dice You can look inside the wardrobe if you pay the right price But you can never get to Narnia the same way twice And they said: "A year ago I was just like you, kid Desperate for status at the bottom of the pyramid" There's too many gurus and not enough humility Respect the accomplishments of those that came before But leave your blind faith and credulity at the door Grow your own set of wings if you want to learn to fly Don't put all of your hope in a superhero passing by If you want to know the point of this song Beware of any teacher that insists everybody else is wrong We all have our own paths and all of them are long When their shortcuts fail they'll tell you it's because your faith's not strong Wisdom from the mouths of babes Charlatans and fakes You can learn a whole lot from them But most of all from their mistakes There's too many gurus and not enough humility
